In a TV program presented by NHK, an experiment was conducted to analyze a couple’s conversation using brain science to find out what kind of conversations would increase satisfaction and strengthen the bond between the couple.

Questions such as “What did you do yesterday?” were asked and areas where movement of brain activity waveforms matched showed more positive feelings, which resulted in higher conversation satisfaction.

As a result of measuring the blood flow in the “dorsal medial prefrontal cortex” of six couples for 5 minutes, the content that showed the most positive feeling was “I want you to fix this and that”. On the other hand, conversations involving some form of complaint showed little sympathy between couples and that their relationships did not deepen as much.

The conversation theme “I want you to fix this and that” seems to increase empathy and the bond between couples, because couples are talking while caring for the other person, so the mind and “heart” deepens more.

In order to further deepen the bond between couples, proper conversation is the first step in improving the quality of marital communication.
